Prayer Blog

Description of the 40 Day Prayer Campaign

In the spring of 2009, an idea was proposed to a group of young United Methodist leaders who hope to aid in the renewal of The United Methodist Church. Quite simply, the idea was to turn to God in prayer. Beginning May 18, 40 young United Methodist leaders will lend their voice to a collaborative prayer effort for The United Methodist Church. Each day one prayer will be published to this website that has been written by a young leader serving The United Methodist Church. You are invited to join us on our journey.

Interestingly, this project was born through social media. Many of us are yet to meet face to face. Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and other forums have helped us to band together, discuss ideas, learn about ministry in other places, pray for one another, and share in the work of the ministry. The idea that young United Methodist leaders should join together in prayer was proposed via a blog. In the weeks that followed the initial proposal, over 50 people responded willing to pray or to provide a written prayer for this campaign. Respondents represent 22 different annual conferences within United Methodism. This group is geographically and theologically diverse, yet we are united by our love for Jesus Christ and the mission and ministry of The United Methodist Church.

All participants in this effort have invited two others from their networks to join alongside them in praying for softened hearts, sensitivity to God's leading, and discernment for how The United Methodist Church can best be in ministry with and for all people. Others are welcome to walk with us.

We pray that our efforts will lead to a healthier and more vibrant church, the strengthening of our witness to the gospel of and about Jesus Christ, and a more hopeful tomorrow. Join us in prayer, and then join us in the work of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Glory be to God in the highest.

Ever-living God,

Day 16 :: June 2, 2009

Holy God,

Your piercing light shines through the darkness.

Day 15 :: June 1, 2009

 Shepherd,
All we like sheep have gone astray.

Alpha and Omega,
We do not know the beginning from the end.

Father,
We need your love.

Savior,
We need your blood.

Day 14 :: May 31, 2009

Today begins the second stage in our journey: illumination. We now articulate the vision God has given us for how we might be agents of healing in our communities and for all of creation as we participate in the work of the New Creation.  In this stage we are in a prayerful, receptive, and meditative posture toward God, while beginning to envision the future God has for us.

Giver of life and light,

Day 13 :: May 30, 2009

 In the last hours of the darkness of night, we wait with anticipation for the breaking light of the morning.

Day 12 :: May 29, 2009

O God,

Who traveled with Israel through the desert and remained with them even though they continued to trust only their appointed leaders and their own creations:

Day 11 :: May 28, 2009

 Gracious God,

You are the Creator of All.
You are the Redeemer of All.
You are the Sustainer of All.

Day 10 :: May 27, 2009

God of hope and strength, we come to you broken.

Our bowl of life and spirit is chipped, cracked and leaking the essential fibers that we need to be true disciples of your Word. Our broken bowl is filled with selfish needs and desires:

Pride,
Stubbornness,

Word of Response

Thank you for joining us thus far on our journey during this 40 Days of Prayer.  If you have a word of response, please visit here and leave a thought, comment, or word of encouragement.  It is our hope that these prayers not only inspire unity, but evoke conversation, allowing us to discover together God's dream for this community.
May God bless you.
BAS

Day 9 :: May 26, 2009

Gracious God,

Day 8 :: May 25, 2009

God of Grace,

Day 7 :: May 24, 2009

God of grace,

We are mired by our inability to slow down, take heart, and wake up.

We don’t slow down because we are afraid that we’re going to miss something.
We don’t take heart because we think we can do it on our own.

Day 6 :: May 23, 2009

 Eternal God,

Hear our prayer.

Day 5 :: May 22, 2009

God,

Give us the eyes to see and the ears to hear.

There is light in the darkness that surrounds us.
You are that light.
You are our hope.
